(SINL NIGERIA) The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced steady progress on the ongoing rehabilitation of the Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation, with the project on course for completion in July 2026.
According to a statement signed by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the upgrade project, which commenced in March, is aimed at strengthening transmission capacity and improving power supply reliability in the affected areas.
The company disclosed that installation of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment is currently underway, while two 60MVA power transformers have already been delivered to replace the existing 30MVA units.
Upon completion, the substation’s capacity is expected to increase significantly, adding 60MVA to its transmission capability.
TCN explained that to minimise disruption during the rehabilitation period, two mobile transformers were earlier deployed to support power offtake by Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies, thereby preventing a total blackout for customers.
The statement added that overhaul is also expected to address persistent breakdowns and downtime associated with the ageing GIS infrastructure currently in use at the facility.
While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the ongoing works, TCN appealed to electricity consumers for patience, noting that the project is designed to deliver long-term improvements in power supply.
