(SINL NIGERIA) The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on Corps Members to use social media responsibly and promote national unity in their online engagements.
Addressing the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Corps Members at orientation camps in Kubwa, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Keffi, Nasarawa State, General Nafiu emphasized the need for participants to reflect the core ideals of the NYSC in their conduct, both offline and online.
He reminded the Corps Members of their expected roles in the 2027 General Elections, urging them to remain strictly non-partisan as critical stakeholders in the electoral process.
According to him, neutrality must be evident in all their activities, including social media interactions.
The NYSC helmsman also encouraged Corps Members to build meaningful relationships during their service year, noting that such connections could yield lifelong benefits.
He cited examples of notable Nigerians who developed enduring friendships during their service.
General Nafiu further highlighted the importance of the service year in fostering national integration, stating that exposure to different cultures and communities would deepen participants’ understanding of Nigeria’s diversity and strengthen unity.
He urged Corps Members to sustain the spirit of camaraderie and teamwork cultivated during orientation camp activities, carrying it forward into their future endeavors in the interest of national cohesion.
The Director-General also reminded Corps Members of their responsibility to give back to society, noting that many of them may have previously benefited from the contributions of Corps teachers.
On economic empowerment, he advised participants to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme seriously, describing it as a viable pathway to financial independence through additional income streams or full-time employment after service.
General Nafiu further offered financial guidance, encouraging Corps Members to cultivate a saving culture by setting aside part of their monthly allowance.
He acknowledged that the service year may be demanding but described it as a period of sacrifice and national duty.
He also urged them to initiate impactful community development projects, building on the legacies of past Corps Members and contributing meaningfully to national development.
Earlier, the FCT Coordinator, Samson Ateli, disclosed that a total of 6,225 Corps Members had been registered for service in the territory. Similarly, the Nasarawa State Coordinator, Hajia Salamatu Muhammad, said 2,679 Corps Members were registered at the Keffi orientation camp, including 796 deployed to serve in the FCT.
