The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commended security agencies and local vigilante groups for the successful rescue of 16 corps members abducted in Kogi State on August 26, 2026.
Recall, the corps members were kidnapped while travelling from the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bayelsa State to Abuja following the completion of their orientation course.
In a statement signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the NYSC management praised the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Kogi State Vigilante groups and other stakeholders for their roles in the search and rescue operation.
The Scheme described the operation as a demonstration of professionalism, courage, commitment and effective coordination among the security agencies.
It also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that his concern for the safety and welfare of corps members nationwide contributed to the urgency with which the security agencies handled the rescue operation.
The NYSC further commended the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Minister of Youth Development for their roles in the recovery of the abducted corps members.
The Scheme expressed appreciation to the families of the affected corps members for their patience and cooperation throughout the ordeal.
It also praised the media for its professional handling of the incident, particularly for reporting the development without compromising the safety of the victims while they were in captivity.
According to the NYSC, all 16 corps members have been safely recovered and are in high spirits, with plans to resume at their respective places of primary assignment.
“Management is relieved that all affected Corps Members have been safely recovered and are in high spirits, eager to resume at their places of primary assignment,” the statement said.
The Scheme noted that the corps members’ resilience in the face of the traumatic experience was commendable, assuring them of continued support as they recover from the ordeal.
The NYSC also said lessons had been learnt from the incident, adding that relevant protocols would be reviewed to strengthen protective measures and prevent a recurrence.
“The Scheme remains committed to the safety and welfare of all Corps Members and will continue working with government and security agencies to strengthen protective measures,” it said.
