(SINL NIGERIA) The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has concluded the 2026 Chief of Defence Staff Democracy Day Volleyball Championship, reaffirming the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s (AFN) commitment to physical fitness, esprit de corps and jointness jointness.

Director Defence Information said the event held at the Aguiyi Ironsi Indoor Sports Complex, Abuja, was part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
He stated that the championship brought together male and female teams from across the Services in a vibrant display of sportsmanship, professionalism and healthy competition.
At the closing ceremony, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, GCOR, commended participants, organisers and officials for the seamless conduct of the event.
He stated that the championship was timely and significant reiterating the need for AFN personnel to remain physically, mentally and emotionally fit to meet the demands of military service and national expectations.
He praised the exceptional skills, discipline and sportsmanship displayed, noting that volleyball fosters concentration, endurance, resilience and teamwork – core attributes of military service.
“The true value of this championship lies beyond medals and trophies,” the CDS said, adding that “Its greatest achievements are the experiences shared, friendships forged and the spirit of unity strengthened among our personnel.”
He congratulated the winners and urged other competitors to remain steadfast, emphasizing that every contest offers lessons for personal and professional growth.
The CDS was represented by the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, Rear Admiral Sabiru Lawal.
Earlier, the Chief of Defence Administration, Rear Admiral Gideon Kachim, described the event as a celebration of unity, professionalism and the camaraderie that defines the AFN.
He noted that volleyball mirrors the focus, discipline, teamwork and mental strength expected of personnel in their constitutional roles.
Rear Admiral Kachim added that sports remain vital for building resilience, sustaining operational fitness and identifying talents to represent the AFN and Nigeria at national and international levels.
Meanwhile, in both the male and female categories, the Nigerian Navy teams emerged champions, defeating other Service teams to clinch the coveted trophies and cash prizes. The Navy also swept the Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards for both categories.
Sports is one of the key means used by the Armed Forces to deepen jointness and foster camaraderie within the AFN. Judging by the active participation,
keen competition and esprit de corps exhibited during the Championship the aim of the event has been achieved.
