NNPC Commissions Upgraded Medical Wards at Igbobi Orthopedic Hospital

By Saminu Ibrahim

(SINL NIGERIA) The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC Limited has commissioned and handed over three rehabilitated 100-bed capacity wards to the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi in Lagos, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement on Wednesday signed by Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer
NNPC Ltd.

The intervention, executed by the NNPC Foundation, involved the comprehensive rehabilitation and upgrade of Wards G, H, and J. The project included the installation of new hospital beds, a central medical gas system, replacement of roofing and ceilings, upgrade of electrical and mechanical systems, and installation of modern vinyl flooring.

According to the statement, before the intervention, the affected wards were reportedly in poor condition, limiting their functionality and reducing the hospital’s capacity to admit and manage patients effectively.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari—represented by the Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Adedapo Segun—said the company’s definition of profitability goes beyond revenue generation to include meaningful social impact.

He noted that the rehabilitation project reflects NNPC’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of Nigerians through targeted investments in critical sectors such as healthcare.

Also speaking, Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, said the initiative underscores the foundation’s role in delivering impactful interventions aligned with national healthcare priorities.

“Beyond the immediate benefits, this effort reflects the role NNPC Foundation plays as the social impact arm of NNPC Limited. Our focus remains on practical interventions that improve lives,” she said.

In his remarks, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Wakeel Lawal, disclosed that the hospital had previously faced serious infrastructural challenges that necessitated a request for support from the NNPC Foundation.

He expressed appreciation to the management of NNPC Limited for responding to the request and delivering what he described as a transformation of the wards to international standards.

“What NNPC Limited has done goes beyond rehabilitation. It represents a renewal of hope,” he said.

The event was attended by senior officials of NNPC Limited, including Executive Vice President, Business Services, Mrs. Sophia Mbakwe, as well as community representatives.

A key highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by the GCEO’s representative alongside hospital management and traditional leaders, including the Baale of Bajulaiye Community, Alhaji Rodiyallahu Alabi Yunusa, who represented the Oba of Somolu.
