The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched an investigation into allegations of unprofessional conduct by personnel at its Akwa Ibom State office in Uyo following a video circulating on social media.
The Commission expressed serious concern over the allegations, stressing that its personnel must treat complainants with dignity, respect and professionalism, regardless of any provocation.
In a statement on Thursday by its Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, the NHRC said its professional standards required staff to maintain appropriate conduct at all times, particularly when dealing with individuals seeking redress for human rights violations.
“Protecting human rights begins with how we treat those who seek our help. Every complainant must be treated with dignity, respect and professionalism,” the statement said.
The Commission disclosed that its Executive Secretary, Chief Tony Ojukwu, OFR, had directed an immediate investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
It added that appropriate administrative action would be taken in accordance with existing rules if any violation was established.
Reaffirming its commitment to accessible, free, timely and accountable service delivery, the NHRC urged members of the public experiencing difficulties accessing its offices to report such complaints through its toll-free line, 6472.
The Commission reiterated the importance of upholding professional standards in the discharge of its mandate to protect and promote human rights across the country.
