Prof. Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, National Coordinator of the National Movement for Tinubu-Shettima 2027 – Forward Nigeria, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of his former Media Aide, Mr. Mike Odiakose.
Odiakose died on September 16, 2026.
In a condolence message, Alkali described the death as a painful loss to the deceased’s family, the journalism profession and Nigeria’s political communication community.
He said Odiakose’s contributions to journalism and public affairs had created a vacuum that would be difficult to fill.
According to him, Odiakose was an accomplished political journalist whose career spanned several reputable media organisations, including The Observer, Nigerian Pilot and Daily Assets newspapers.
Alkali said the late journalist distinguished himself through dedication, integrity and commitment to factual reporting, particularly in his coverage of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He recalled that his relationship with Odiakose began during his tenure as National Publicity Secretary of the PDP between 2008 and 2012, when the deceased actively covered the activities of the party.
“His professionalism, willingness to offer constructive advice and perspectives that often enhanced our engagement with the media stood him out,” Alkali said.
He added that Odiakose’s understanding of political communication and balanced approach to journalism earned him his admiration and respect.
Alkali further recalled that when he was appointed Special Adviser on Political Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan in June 2014, he invited Odiakose to join his team as Media Aide.
“It was a decision I never regretted. Throughout that difficult transitional period, we worked together very closely, and he demonstrated calmness, diligence, competence and uncommon loyalty,” he said.
The former presidential aide said Odiakose provided valuable support and guidance in shaping media interventions and ensuring that communication strategies reflected clarity, professionalism and purpose.
Alkali also disclosed that Odiakose was recently nominated to serve as a member of the National Movement for Tinubu-Shettima 2027 – Forward Nigeria, describing his death as the loss of “a jewel.”
Beyond his official duties, Alkali said Odiakose remained a trusted confidant and dependable ally long after the 2015 presidential election.
He described him as a man of humility, sincerity and wisdom whose counsel was thoughtful and commitment to duty unwavering.
Alkali said the journalist’s death was particularly painful coming at a time when Nigeria was approaching another important phase in its democratic journey.
He noted that the country had lost a seasoned journalist whose experience and institutional knowledge would have continued to contribute to political reporting and public discourse.
He extended his condolences to Odiakose’s family, friends, colleagues and associates, as well as members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), particularly the FCT Council.
“The Nigerian media community has indeed lost one of its finest professionals,” Alkali said.
While mourning his death, Alkali urged Nigerians to celebrate Odiakose’s life and legacy, which he said was dedicated to truth, professionalism, friendship and service.
He prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the deceased’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus and give his family, friends and colleagues the fortitude to bear the loss.
