The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), on Sunday joined senior government officials, Christian faithful and members of the diplomatic corps at an inter-denominational church service to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary in Abuja.
The service, held at the National Christian Centre, was themed, “Anchored on Hope: The Path to Divine Stability and Shared Prosperity.”
It formed part of the activities marking the nation’s Independence Anniversary.
Musa delivered the first Scripture reading and used the occasion to call for national unity, peace and collective support for Nigeria’s security forces.
The Defence Minister said the Armed Forces remained committed to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and restoring lasting peace across the country.
“As we mark 66 years of our nationhood, our hope for a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria remains unshakeable,” he said.
According to him, security goes beyond military operations, stressing that it is fundamental to national unity and shared prosperity.
“Security is not merely an operational task; it is the fundamental foundation upon which national unity and shared prosperity are built,” Musa said.
He urged Nigerians to support members of the armed forces and remain united in faith and commitment to the country.
The service was attended by Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; Service Chiefs; members of the diplomatic corps and Christian clergy, among other dignitaries.
Akpabio, in his remarks, prayed for the peace and stability of Nigeria, stressing the need for harmony and collective efforts to achieve sustainable peace.
Akume, who delivered the vote of thanks, also called for the preservation of democratic stability as the country approaches future civic milestones.
“As we look toward the 2027 elections ahead, let us remember that democracy is sustained by peace and unity,” the SGF said, urging Nigerians to continue supporting the democratic process.
The service ended with the ceremonial cutting of the 66th Independence Anniversary cake by Musa and other dignitaries.
