Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, have foiled a terrorist ambush along the Miyanti–Banki Junction axis in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, killing three terrorists and recovering arms and an Improvised Explosive Device.
SINL NIgeria Online reports that the operation took place at about 8:30am on Tuesday, when troops of the 151 Task Force Battalion, while conducting operations along the Miyanti–Banki Main Supply Route, came under attack after terrorists detonated an IED and opened heavy gunfire.
The troops responded and fought through the ambush before conducting an immediate search of the area.
The military said three terrorists were neutralised during the encounter, while troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, one magazine and 14 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.
Another IED was also recovered and secured during the operation, saying one soldier sustained injuries and was evacuated for medical treatment. He was said to be stable and responding to treatment, while a military gun truck suffered minor damage.
In a separate development, two suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province surrendered to troops of Sector 3 in Monguno later the same day.
The two terrorists, who surrendered at about 8:20pm, handed over two AK-47 rifles, two magazines and eight rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.
Other items recovered from them included four Android phones, a button phone, earbuds, a power bank, an ATM card, memory card, USB cable, two head warmers and a bag.
Preliminary investigation showed that the two men were reportedly part of a group of 10 terrorists who left an ISWAP camp in Arinna Chiki with the intention of surrendering to the military.
However, the group reportedly encountered an ISWAP patrol while on their way, resulting in an exchange of fire.
The whereabouts of the remaining eight members of the group remain unknown, with troops intensifying efforts to locate them and determine their status.
The surrendered terrorists, recovered weapons and other items are currently in the custody of Headquarters Sector 3 for further investigation.
The Theatre Command said the developments reflected the increasing pressure on terrorist elements in the North-East, as Operation HADIN KAI continues to disrupt terrorist activities, restrict their freedom of movement and encourage fighters willing to abandon violence to surrender.
It reaffirmed its commitment to sustained offensive operations against terrorists, while protecting communities, securing critical routes and supporting efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the theatre.
