The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed claims by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) regarding an alleged unexpected trip of its T11 transformer at the Lekki Transmission Substation.
TCN, in a statement on Thursday, said the incident reported on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, involved the simultaneous tripping of EKEDC’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders at about 4:34 a.m. due to overcurrent and earth fault.
According to the company, the fault triggered the inter-tripping of its TR1 60MVA, 132/33kV transformer primary and secondary breakers, accompanied by a heavy bang and smoke.
TCN said its maintenance crew promptly responded to the incident, rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker and restored both the primary and secondary breakers later the same day.
It, however, explained that when EKEDC attempted to close its Oniru feeder on trial, the same relay indications caused another trip, necessitating further corrective work.
The transmission company stressed that there was no outage on its T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDC, maintaining that the incident was strictly related to the distribution company’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders.
“TCN’s technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time,” the statement said.
TCN assured electricity consumers affected by the incident that it was actively addressing the fault and regretted the inconvenience caused.
The company also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the transmission network and putting in place a more robust system to improve electricity supply.
