The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) has confirmed an explosion on a gas pipeline belonging to its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, raising concerns over reported injuries and damage to residential buildings and businesses in the area.
In a statement on Friday, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Limited, Andy Odeh, said the company had activated its emergency response procedures and isolated the affected pipeline segment to prevent further damage.
He said the company was working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to coordinate the emergency response and assess the impact of the incident on residents, property and the environment.
NNPC Limited expressed concern over reports of injuries and property damage, extending its sympathies to those affected and their families.
The company said protecting lives and preventing further harm remained its immediate priorities.
It added that it was engaging with community leaders to identify the immediate needs of affected residents and coordinate appropriate support.
According to the statement, the cause of the explosion and the full extent of the damage were still being investigated.
The statement said relevant operational information, including previous reports and actions taken, would be reviewed to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine appropriate corrective measures.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to the safe and reliable operation of its facilities, the protection of host communities and environmental safety.
It however urged residents and members of the public to keep away from the affected area and comply with safety instructions issued by emergency responders and relevant authorities.
The company promised to provide further updates as verified information becomes available.
