NIMC Arrests Suspects, Seizes Equipment in Crackdown on Illegal NIN Enrolment

News

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has intensified its crackdown on illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment, unauthorised data modification and extortion, following an enforcement operation that led to several arrests and the seizure of illegal enrolment equipment in Gwagwalada and other locations.

The operation, carried out by the Commission’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU), is part of efforts to curb unauthorised enrolment activities and unethical practices capable of undermining the integrity, security and credibility of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.

In a statement issued on October 30, 2026, NIMC said many of the challenges experienced by NIN holders stemmed from attempts to bypass approved enrolment procedures.

The Commission stressed that NIN enrolment could only be conducted at its officially approved centres, while requests for data modification should be processed through its self-service platform.

It also advised NIN holders to download the NINAuth application from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store to access security benefits, protect their NIN and print their NIN slips.

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the Commission’s zero tolerance for extortion and other unethical practices.

She assured Nigerians and legal residents of the Commission’s commitment to providing seamless and hitch-free NIN enrolment services.

NIMC urged applicants and existing NIN holders to patronise only its approved channels for enrolment and related services.

It advised members of the public to visit its official website, www.nimc.gov.ng, or follow its verified social media platforms for accurate information.

The Commission also provided its toll-free contact line, 0800 0616 462, for enquiries and complaints.
