A group, The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has applauded the listing of 29 Nigerian universities in global rankings.

In a statement by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, TMV noted that it was the highest representation by any country in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The group said: “It is noted that Nigeria has strengthened its position in the higher education landscape with 29 Nigerian universities featuring in the 2027 Times Higher Education(THE) World University Rankings.

“Of greater significance is the fact that federal universities account for 5 of Nigeria’s 7 universities in the top 1,200. Also, the number of Nigerian universities ranked globally increased from 24 in 2025 to 29 in 2026.

“Among the 29 Nigerian universities, five of them joined the Times Higher Education Rankings for the first time this year.

“We believe that this positive development can be attributed to the ongoing reforms under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration and the Ministry of Education’s efforts to improve the quality, competitiveness and global visibility of the country’s tertiary education system.

“It is worthy of note that the increased participation and improved performance are related to the Renewed Hope Agenda for Education and the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative, which have placed greater emphasis on research excellence, innovation, institutional performance and international competitiveness.

“From available records, Nigerian universities recorded upward movement from 24 to 61 universities.

“We also acknowledge that since the inception of the Tinubu administration, Nigerian universities have witnessed stability with the absence of industrial actions, approval and prompt payment of salaries and allowances.”

The group applauded the federal government for paying attention to the country’s tertiary education, which has led to the global recognition being accorded to Nigerian universities.
