The Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) has urged Nigerians to strengthen national unity, uphold patriotism and actively participate in the country’s democratic process as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The association also called on citizens to participate in the 2027 General Elections, saying their involvement was crucial to determining the country’s future through the democratic process.
ACOE Chairman, Comrade Sola Akingboye, made the call in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja to commemorate the anniversary.
Akingboye congratulated Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, saying the anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey, achievements and challenges since independence.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to peaceful coexistence irrespective of ethnic, religious, political or geographical differences.
According to him, Nigeria’s diversity should be viewed as a strength and an opportunity to build a more inclusive and prosperous society.
The ACOE chairman stressed the importance of active electoral participation in strengthening democracy and ensuring accountability among elected representatives.
He also urged political parties and actors, civil society organisations, the media and other stakeholders to promote issue-based campaigns and peaceful engagement before, during and after the 2027 elections.
Akingboye cautioned Nigerians against violence, hate speech, misinformation and other acts capable of undermining national peace and democratic stability.
He said the media, particularly online platforms, had a responsibility to provide credible information and promote responsible public discourse.
The chairman called on Nigerians to use the independence anniversary to renew their commitment to the country and contribute positively to its development.
He reaffirmed ACOE’s commitment to responsible journalism, national unity and democratic values, while urging Nigerians to work collectively towards building a peaceful and prosperous nation.
Akingboye wished Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary and expressed optimism that the country would overcome its challenges and realise its full potential.
