(SINL NIGERIA) The Presidency has dismissed as false and misleading a viral report alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning constitutional amendments to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in the northern states.
A statement on Thursday signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described the report as fake news concocted by “desperate politicians” seeking to create tension and destabilise the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, the report, which cited anonymous sources, was part of a deliberate attempt to stir political unrest and heat up the polity through divisive narratives.
Specifically, the presidency urged Nigerians to disregard the story entirely, stressing that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has no intention of sponsoring any bill code-named “Project True Federation” before the National Assembly.
It further clarified that constitutional amendments are serious legislative matters that cannot be undertaken arbitrarily, noting that any amendment to the Constitution requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly as well as approval by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
The statement maintained that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering tangible benefits to Nigerians rather than engaging in divisive political distractions.
Ahead of 2027 general elections, the Presidency also warned citizens against falling victim to fake and inflammatory reports, especially as political activities begin to intensify.
