TCN Adds 635MVA Transformer Capacity to South-South Network

News

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has added 635 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of transformer capacity to its South-South network as part of efforts to improve electricity transmission and enhance bulk power delivery to distribution companies.

The General Manager, Port Harcourt Transmission Region, Engr. Nasiru Bello, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with TCN Transmission News, highlighting key infrastructure upgrades and ongoing projects aimed at addressing transmission constraints in the region.

Bello said the additional capacity would enable the transmission network to wheel more electricity and improve bulk power supply to distribution load centres for onward delivery to consumers.

The capacity addition comprises one 125MVA transformer at Port Harcourt Town Transmission Substation, two 125MVA transformers at Port Harcourt Main Transmission Substation, one 125MVA transformer at Alaoji Transmission Substation, one 75MVA transformer at Aba Transmission Substation, and one 60MVA transformer at Itu Transmission Substation.

Beyond the completed installations, Bello said TCN was undertaking additional projects to expand transmission capacity and strengthen electricity supply infrastructure across the region.

He disclosed that construction was ongoing on the 2x160MVA Ekori and 2x160MVA Obudu Transmission Substations in the Calabar Sub-Region, while the Ogoja Transmission Substation project had reached approximately 90 per cent completion.

According to him, plans have also been finalised for a new transmission substation in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, with site mobilisation and project execution expected to commence shortly.

The regional manager explained that the expansion projects were being complemented by routine maintenance and rehabilitation of existing transmission assets to improve equipment reliability and minimise avoidable downtime.

He added that the interventions would also help reduce technical losses across the network, thereby improving transmission efficiency.

Bello said the projects aligned with TCN’s broader mandate to expand and modernise Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure to ensure more reliable bulk electricity delivery to distribution load centres across the South-South and other parts of the country.
