The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Kano Region, has held a coordination meeting with key stakeholders to plan a proposed power outage and load diversion for the elongation of Towers 27 and 28 on the Kumbotso–Dan Agundi 132kV Transmission Line.
The meeting, held on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the TCN Regional Conference Room in Kano, brought together representatives of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), project contractors and the Kano State Ministry of Works.
It was chaired by the General Manager, Transmission, Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, who expressed confidence in the contractors’ competence but stressed the need for a thorough assessment of all proposed technical connections and switching arrangements before implementation.
Bello said the assessment was necessary to safeguard operational safety and maintain the reliability of the transmission network during the project.
Speaking at the meeting, NISO Regional Operations Coordinator, Engr. Kunle Egbedinni, emphasised strict compliance with the Grid Code, particularly the requirement that applications for planned outages be submitted at least 14 days in advance for approval.
The Head of Operations and Maintenance at KEDCO, Engr. Sabiu Haruna, proposed diverting the load currently served by the Dan Agundi 132kV Substation to alternative substations during the proposed two-day outage.
The substations considered for the diversion included Dakata 132kV, Tamburawa 132kV, Rimin Zakara 330kV, Kumbotso 330kV and Wudil 132kV.
Participants reviewed the capacity of the transmission network and assessed alternative supply arrangements to minimise disruptions during the exercise.
During the discussions, stakeholders observed that the Hadejia 132kV Substation could not accommodate the entire 60-megawatt load earmarked for diversion. They subsequently examined alternative supply options through the Tamburawa, Rimin Zakara and Dakata substations.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of protecting personnel and equipment throughout the project, with stakeholders stressing the need for proper coordination of switching operations and adherence to established safety procedures.
At the end of the meeting, the participating agencies and contractors pledged to strengthen inter-agency collaboration, comply with regulatory requirements and facilitate the timely execution of the tower elongation project.
The proposed intervention is aimed at enabling the planned transmission line works to proceed with appropriate safety measures and coordinated load management.
