A New Era of Accountability and Partnership: Strengthening Governance Standards for Africa and Advancing Global Stability

The recent tensions surrounding Nigeria’s redesignation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) have created an opportunity for deeper reflection by both African governments and the international community.

At a time of rising geopolitical pressures, widening governance gaps, and growing public frustration, it is essential to adopt forward-looking policies that strengthen leadership accountability, reduce instability, and promote shared prosperity.

Across Africa, citizens continue to grapple with the consequences of governance failures, poverty, insecurity, irregular migration, and declining public trust. Yet many public officials and their families enjoy privileges abroad that are made possible by systems their citizens cannot access at home. This imbalance fuels discontent and undermines efforts at national renewal.

To foster a more responsible leadership culture, the international community – particularly the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Canada, UAE, and other advanced nations, should consider aligning their visa, residency, health and educational policies with governance behaviour. Restricting overseas privileges for leaders who fail to deliver on public service standards could encourage a renewed commitment to accountability, fairness, and national development.

Precedents exist: sanctions against Russian oligarchs, governance-linked visa rules in Latin America, and recent integrity-based travel restrictions on several officials worldwide.

Furthermore, African governments must elevate the quality of their diplomatic representation. Ambassadors should be chosen not only for political relevance at home but for their global competence – individuals skilled in strategic communication, international branding, investment diplomacy, and multilateral negotiation. In an interconnected world, nations rise or fall by the calibre of voices representing them abroad.

At the same time, Africa must also deepen its own sense of agency. The continent’s natural resources such as its gold, minerals, agriculture, and emerging energy potential not forgetting the human capital – remain some of the world’s most valuable. These assets must be leveraged through partnerships that treat African nations as equals, not subordinates. Responsible governance paired with fair global engagement ensures Africa is not merely receiving guidance from abroad but contributing meaningfully to shared global prosperity.

Lastly, Western development partners should consider adopting a performance-based support model. If $1 billion is allocated to Africa, distribution should reflect governance outcomes: security reforms, anti-corruption efforts, human rights compliance, and transparent public finance. This reward-based model incentivises delivery, strengthens institutions, and ensures that public funds reach communities and not private pockets.

These measures are neither punitive nor anti-African or vice-versa with donor nations and agencies. They are pro-accountability, pro-development, and pro-people. Africa’s greatest assets are its citizens, its diversity, and its potential. Strengthening leadership performance will enhance global partnerships, attract investments, reduce forced migration especially out of Africa, and build a more balanced and prosperous world where Africa is a respected partner.
