The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard M. Doro, has said the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to reduce poverty and create sustainable pathways out of vulnerability for millions of Nigerians.
Doro stated this while convening a high-level side event at the ongoing 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, themed, “Beyond Assistance: Reducing Poverty, Advancing Protection and Building Shared Prosperity.”
The minister said the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, was implementing interventions aimed at helping vulnerable households overcome poverty and build sustainable livelihoods.
According to him, humanitarian interventions must go beyond immediate relief to provide vulnerable people with credible pathways to resilience, self-reliance and shared prosperity.
He said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remained committed to strengthening programmes designed to support vulnerable Nigerians and promote sustainable development.
Doro added that the government would continue to work with development partners and other stakeholders to ensure that humanitarian assistance translates into long-term improvements in the lives of beneficiaries.
The side event was convened in partnership with Innovations for Poverty Action, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), IQS and the Learning Economy Foundation.
Messages and contributions were delivered by the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, represented by Mohamed Yahya; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; IOM Deputy Director-General, Operations, Ms Ugochi Daniels; and other experts.
The participants emphasised the need for humanitarian assistance to remain focused on saving lives while also addressing the underlying vulnerabilities that keep people trapped in poverty.
