A Legal practitioner, Amobi Nzelu, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s political direction, warning that the country may be drifting towards a one-party system amid reports that some opposition governors have agreed to coordinate President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.
Nzelu, who is the Principal Partner at Chinenye Chambers and known for his role in the Apo Six case, made the remarks while commenting on the reported political development.
He described the involvement of opposition figures in the ruling party’s campaign activities as a development that could undermine democratic principles.
According to him, the opposition plays a critical role in a democratic system by providing checks and balances on the ruling party and holding the government accountable.
He argued that when opposition leaders take up responsibilities in the ruling party’s campaign, it could weaken their capacity to perform this important democratic function.
Nzelu observed that Nigeria’s political landscape had become increasingly difficult to understand, noting that several political manoeuvres and behind-the-scenes activities remained unknown to the general public.
He, however, acknowledged that individuals have the constitutional right to support any political party or tendency of their choice, stressing that such decisions must be considered in the broader context of their implications for democracy.
The lawyer also noted that the current administration inherited a government facing significant challenges and had, in its efforts to address them, gone beyond acceptable limits in some areas.
Despite the political challenges confronting the country, Nzelu expressed optimism that Nigeria’s future would ultimately be determined by the will of God.
